CAD (Computer Aided Design)
In this day of high tech answers to our daily needs, jewelry has not been forgotten. Computer Aided Design and prototyping equipment have made it possible for jewelers to create exquisite wax models without even touching a piece of wax.
We must note that CAD file development comes with a price… not only is the software and the prototyping equipment expensive, but the learning curve is tremendous. For this and many other reasons, commissioning a professional wax model maker often remains the best option.
How It's Done...
This illustration shows how a ring looks within the computer. The wire frame gives you an idea of the structure of the item and it allows the designer to be very accurate as the structure is built.
In the illustration below you will see a demonstration of how an item is created within the computer.
In this animation we have shown the series of steps required to develop a CAD file of a simple ring.
At WaxModels we use 'Rhinoceros' computer aided design software. This software requires the designer to develop an item like this ring with a series of surfaces. When these surfaces are made and then joined together, they are recognized by the computer as a solid object.
Anything that can be carved out of wax by hand can also be created in a CAD program such as Rhino.
